Non-Fiction Writing
If covid taught us anything, it was to make and take opportunities which may not necessarily have been available before the pandemic set in. I was asked by Newsquest to write reviews for their various publications ( google: Katherine Ikonen ). The first was Masterchef winner Steven Edwards on the opening of his new restaurant venture and recently nine venues in Mayfair including Gordon Ramsey’s, The Beaumont Hotel and the 007 Bollinger Bar. This last written effort went out on 101 websites with a readership of 31 million. Therefore, for me, covid produced an opportunity I may not have had before. I think it is so important when you are teaching students how to write, that you can write yourself; that you have a style and level of expertise they can aspire to; that they can see that like them, their teacher is producing the written word for discerning audiences under very strict deadlines.
All GCSE boards require students to produce non-fiction pieces of writing under timed conditions and it is essential that some time is given to the studying of different non-fiction texts such as newspaper articles, magazine articles, letters, and blogs. They will be asked to re-create such texts in an exam.
